Minot Air Force Base has five school board members who are appointed to three-year terms.

All meetings are open to the public and are subject to North Dakota law. A majority of the Board (3) constitutes a quorum for the transaction of business. Agendas are available at each meeting for visitors and for the news media.

Lauren Vengels: President
Lauren was appointed to the Minot AFB School Board in July of 2019.
Lauren was born in Newton, Massachusetts and grew up as an Air Force dependent living in different states across the US. As an adult, she lived on the Central Coast, California. She has worked most of her career with Intellectually Disabled Adults and Mentally Ill Adults as a Licensed Psychiatric Technician while living in California. Lauren is currently working towards her B.S. in Business Management and is ultimately striving to become an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist. Lauren and her husband have four children, three of which attend Minot AFB schools. Lauren is looking forward to continuing to play an active role in her children's classrooms while also serving on the Minot AFB Board. It is her hope to positively influence the education for all the students within the Minot AFB schools.
Branda Tanner: Vice-President
Branda was appointed to the Minot AFB School Board in 2019.
Branda Tanner was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana. She has multiple military ties amongst her family members in various branches. Her husband's military career has currently landed her family here in Minot, North Dakota.
Branda has a degree in Education from Montana State and has been actively involved in the school districts and district programs across the country. Branda and her husband, Sonny have two daughters attending Dakota Elementary on the Minot AFB. She enjoys good food with friends, cozy blankets on the couch, and her German Shepherd, Steve. Branda is an advocate for quality education and excited to nurture her children's learning.
Ellen Reed: Member
Ellen was appointed as a school board member in July 2020.
Ellen Reed was born and raised in Coeur d'Alene, ID. She has a Bachelor of Arts in English and German From Concordia College, and a Master of Public Administration from AMU. She and her husband, David, have five children, three of which attend Minot Pubic Schools. She has worked for seven years as an Air Force civilian, and previously worked in education and curriculum development for ESL. She has lived in South Korea, Okinawa, Texas, Germany, and Grand Forks, ND before coming to Minot in 2018. She enjoys camping, fishing, running, reading, travel, cooking and spending time with her family.
Mark Nemish: Member
Mark Nemish was appointed to the MAFB School Board in January of 2021.
Mark is originally from Ozark, Alabama. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geography from The University of Alabama, a master’s degree in human resource management from Troy University, and a master’s degree in military operational arts and science from Air University. Mark retired from the United States Air Force in September of 2018 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served 21 years on active duty in various assignments including nuclear missile launch operations, space launch operations, program management, and professional military education. Since retiring, Mark has been an active volunteer at his children’s school and looks forward to the opportunity to serve our students, families, and educators at Minot Air Force Base.
Mark is married to Colonel Kristen Nemish, commander of the 91st Operations Group at Minot Air Force Base. The have two children, a daughter who attends Memorial Middle School and a son who attends North Plains Elementary School. He enjoys playing, writing, and recording music and watching Alabama Crimson Tide football games.
Joy-Nicole Smith: Member
Joy-Nicole was appointed to the Minot AFB School Board in September of 2021.
Joy-Nicole Smith is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Bio-behavioral Health with Honors and acquired a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from the University of Southern California.
Having served military connected students across Europe as an educator with the Department of Defense of Education Activity (DoDEA), Joy-Nicole believes military connected students are uniquely positioned to excel. Her goal is to continue advocate for and create learning opportunities and experiences for students and families in the Minot community. She is also passionate about STEM learning and enjoys learning about the experiences of others.
Joy-Nicole and her husband have three children with two attending North Plains Elementary School. She enjoys engaging in conversations in Italian and German, biking, playing basketball, and watching college football (Go PSU!).
All 2021-22 Regular School Board Meetings of the Minot Air Force Base School District #160 will be held at 5:00 PM on the second Tuesday of the month at the Memorial Middle School. The dates of those meetings, with exceptions as noted, are as follows:
